Do you ever wonder why some businesses stay open for so long and continue to grow while others don’t make it past a single year of operation? Their secret is like every other successful business and that begins with you!

From working in a restaurant to handling packages in a UPS warehouse, I’ve learned many things about customer success and the different ways you'll encounter it throughout your career. From these previous experiences, I've learned how to excel and even use customer success in my daily life! These are skills you need to succeed in customer success!

Communication

Communication is one of the biggest components of effective customer success. Being able to talk to your customer and understand who they are and what they need is what every business is looking for.

When working at Red Lobster, being communicative with your guest was huge. Talking to them and making sure they’re happy with their service can ultimately be the deciding factor for whether a customer comes back or not. Being tentative towards a customer shows them that you care about their needs and are willing to help.

Empathy

Being able to fully understand someone's situation and share similar thoughts can open a customer right up. When dealing with a guest at Red Lobster or with a coworker that's having a bad day, it's important to make them feel comfortable and show them you care by asking them simple questions like “How was your day?” or “Can I do anything to help?”. Even trying to relate with a customer shows them you care. Showing empathy can create a strong relationship with a customer.

Problem-Solving Skills

When working with customers, you’re going to encounter a lot of questions. Knowing how to answer them will make a customer trust you more. Figuring out the problem for a customer and giving them more insight about a product can be the reason why they choose your company over a competitor.

Major Takeaways

I believe these skills are important in order to succeed in customer success. Without customer success, a lot of businesses wouldn’t last long due to a lack of customer feedback. This is why customer success is the heart of all companies!
